Overview


University education in Sri Lanka is strickly controll by the government. Most of state universities depend on funds given by the University Grant Commission (UGC). The UGC itself comes under the Ministry of Higher Education. Therefore the UGC has a great influence over these universities and administer the undergraduate intake. There are 13 such universities. The UGC itself comes under the Ministry of Higher Education.

University Grant Commission


The University Grant Commission (UGC) is public organization, established under the parliament Act No.16 of 1978. The functions of UGC are allocate funds to the universities and university institutes, serve as central admission agency for undergraduate studies in universities planning, co-ordination and monitoring university system with a view to maintaining academic standards and implement the national policies in respect of the university education in Sri Lanka.

University of Colombo


University of Colombo is the first university in Sri Lanka and it is established at 1942. It is located in Colombo. It has 7 faculties with 41 departments.

University of Peradeniya




The University of Peradeniya is located in Peradeniya and it has great natural beauty. It is the largest university in the island in terms of area, the premises covering about 7 square
kilometres. It is known for its natural beauty and romantic landscape.It is established in 1942. The Mahaweli river flows across the campus in a northerly direction. The site also touches the lower slopes of the Hantana range which results in a mild climate, with the temperature usually fluctuating between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius. The university currently comprises seven
academic faculties.

University of Sri Jayawardanapura


The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is located in a beautiful setting at Gangodawila, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka, fifteen kilometers away from Colombo. It was also conducted Esternal
degrees and Post Graduate degrees.

University of Kelaniya



The University of Kelaniya is in the ancient and historic city of Kelaniya. It has six faculties and four institutions. The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks. It was one of the two great national centres of traditional higher learning. It is established in 1970.

University of Moratuwa



The University of Moratuwa which specialises in Engineering and Technology is undisputedly the best University in Sri Lanka. It is located on the banks of the Bolgoda Lake in Moratuwa. It presents a rich variety of social and cultural activities, student services, clubs, organizations and sports. This vital community of around 3000 students from all around the country, with every imaginable interest, emphasizes respect for the rights and individuality of each student. It was established in 1893.
